About the College

Captain Williamson Memorial Government College was established in 1992. The prominent members, who initiated to open the College, were late Lotsing A. Sangma, then local MLA of Baghmara and the Ex. Minister of Meghalaya and, Shri. P.S. Thankhiew, I.A.S, the then Deputy Commissioner of South Garo Hills, Shri. J. D. Sangma, M.C.S, the then B. D. O, of Baghmara Development Block along with some prominent citizens of Baghmara like Shri. Minto G. Momin, Shri. Daniel S. Marak, Shri. Sorosh R. Marak, Shri. Projection K. Sangma, ex. M.D.C, Wa’gesik Constituency.

The College was inaugurated on 23rd September, 1993 by Shri. Salseng C. Marak, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya. Initially, the College was functioning in the Baghmara Town Committee Hall in the night Shift with 18 (eighteen) number of students. Dr. Donberd Sangma was the Principal and two other part-time lecturers, namely, Shri. Dilip Kr. Saha, Principal, Rangku Memorial Girls’ Higher Secondary School and Shri. S. K. Dubey, Assistant teacher, Jawahar. Novadaya Vidyalaya, Baghmara whose services was indispensable to bring up the college. The College shifted to its RCC Building at Bolsalgre, Baghmara on 6th June 1997 which was inaugurated by Late P.A. Sangma, the then Hon’ble Member of Parliament from Tura Constituency, and the Union Minister of Labour on 4th May, 1994.

The college is offering 10+2 course in Arts and Old Semester System and Four Year Under-Graduate Program (NEP, 2020) in Degree Course (Bachelor of Arts). In addition, the college also offering Degree for Post Graduate in Master of English, Master of History and Master of Political Science through IGNOU. There are 10037 students in the current academic session with 24 (twenty-four) nos. of faculty in the Degree and 7 (seven) nos. are in the Higher Secondary section.

The First Provisional affiliation of the College was received from the NEHU, Shillong on 18th February, 1994 and the Permanent Affiliation for the Degree in Bachelor of Arts with honours obtained from the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong on 13thAugust, 2007. At the beginning the college was running by the individual donations and in February, 1999, the College had received sanction for 75% Adhoc Grants-in-Aid from the Government towards the maintenance of staff salary. The Principal of the College has been trying to revamp the infrastructural sets up; and to promote academic order and harmony in the college by encouraging the academic fraternity to stride harder with in the team spirit to develop the institution.

Recently, the college has received permission to open Science Commerce streams in the college. The Hon’ble Minister for Education has consented to start the science and commerce streams from the next year i.e. 2025-2026 academic year. The College has got UGC recognition under Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act of 1956 on 2nd July, 2024. We have a spacious library-cum-study cabin. The Library online Blog has started where the students and the staff can access directly on the links provided for different e-resources. The blog includes links for e-books both Higher Secondary and Degree Courses, online Newspapers, magazine and online courses etc.

The college committed to explore mechanisms to cope with new academic NEP,2020 syllabi and adopt new tools and techniques in teaching–learning and the administrative management to match national and international requirements.

The college also has a website. All financial transition of the college has been made through SBI COLLECT from this year. Students are able to make payment of admission fees and examinations, besides updating other information through the college website links provided for. This website, however, is a static one and it will be upgraded to dynamics website in a year.

We thankfully acknowledge the Government for unwavering support towards the College, particularly, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad K Sangma, Shri Rakkam A Sangma, Hon’ble Minister for Education, Meghalaya, Shillong for sanctioning the magnificent G+2 college building and 2(two) hostels for both girls and the boys. It was their hard work that facilitated to dedicate the first ever G+2 building to the people of South Garo Hills. We also convey our deepest gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, Shri D.P. Wahlang, IAS, Shri Ambrose Ch. Marak, Secretary to the Govt. Meghalaya, Education Department and Director of Higher and Technical Education, Meghalaya Shillong, Shri Rangsan Mowroh, Chief Consultant, PMUSHA and all other stake-holders that involved in the projects. It was their intervention and personal monitor the project could be completed in time without their support and hard work the building could not have completed in time.

In the recent time Govt. of Meghalaya has sanctioned a sum of Rs.12 crore under RUSA scheme, for the construction of G+1 new college building. In addition to Rs. 3 (Rupees Three Crore) was also received from the NEC infrastructure Development Scheme to construct Boy’s and Girl’s hostels in the college campus. Both the projects had been implemented by the State Higher Education Council, Meghalaya and completed by March, 2024.
